Why Templates Don't Work
I've seen through my Google Analytics that many people are coming to my site in search of Templates. If Templates are what you are after, then you will need to look elsewhere. My site emphasizes effective web design with NO templates used.
When you visit a template site, you are given a general layout for what your site will look like. The idea is that all you have to do is to remove the sample data that you are provided, add your own, and publish your site. What could be easier? Before I answer that question, lets look at some of the downsides.
- Template based websites are rarely, if ever, XHTML & CSS compliant. Some don't use CSS at all, and some use so many style sheets that making changes can be a nightmare. Modern web development rests on the concept of separating your content from your markup. Template sites don't do this effectively.
- So what if you don't want to modify the appearance? Shouldn't the out-of-the-box template work well? Unfortunately, again, most do not. Since these sites combine markup (how the pages look) with the content (what you are wanting your customer to see), the search engines penalize you. A template site will never be found as high in search-engines as a properly coded custom site.
- Most template sites can be recognized at a glance. They just don't have a professional appearance. They look like all of the competitor websites. If originality is desired, then go custom.
What could be easier?
I told you I would get back to this. Hire a designer who understands what it takes to make a site successful. I receive calls from 'web-designers' in this area who cannot troubleshoot the templates they are implementing and their sites go down.
My clients are guaranteed to be on Google (the #1 search engine) within 7 days of a 1Site1Day project. In many cases, the site will be on Google before I leave their office!
They don't have to learn FTP, XHTML, CSS, XML, or any other programming language. They need to know their business, and what makes it stand out. My job is to convey that to the rest of their market.
Finally, for what many people pay in monthly template costs, they could get a site for a full year from 1Site1Day.
